On 28 February 2025, a Kerala school student Muhammed Shahabaz died after being brutally beaten by school students in Thamarassery, Kozhikode, Kerala.[1][2][3][4][5]
Circumstances
[edit]On 23 February 2025, there was a clash at a farewell function of class 10 students at a tuition centre in Thamarassery, Kozhikode. As a result, five days later, on 28 February 2025,[6] a clash broke out between students of GVHSS Thamarassery and students of MJHSS Elatel School. A group of students of GVHSS Thamarassery brutally attacked Sahabas and fatally injured him in the head and eye with Nunchaku. MuhammedShahabaz , who was critically injured, was also admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. He suffered 70% brain damage. He died later the same day.[7]
Investigation and arrest
[edit]The police investigated Shahbaz's murder and arrested 6 people.[8] The statements of the accused were recorded in connection with the incident. The Kerala Police conducted the investigation by recording the statements of the students who were present at the scene of the incident and people who were in nearby shops at the time. The police collected and examined the CCTV footage of the roads near the tuition center where the clash took place in Thamarassery, Kozhikode.[9]
Shahbaz had been beaten with a nunchaku.[10] The postmortem revealed that the cause of death was serious injuries to the skull and brain. There was internal bleeding in the chest wound area, and there were injuries above the right ear and eye. The police reported that the student who attacked Shahbaz knew martial arts.[11]
Public reaction
[edit]Public protests took place in Thamarassery and Kozhikode on 2 March 2025. Students clashed with police and lathi-charged demonstrators in front of the school. On 3 March 2025, the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and MSF held a protest march to the Vellimadukunnu Observation Home to protest the school and police's actions to protect the students accused in Shahabaz's death.[12]
