FC Barcelona C 30–0 FC Cerdanyola del Vallès

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On 22 March 2025, FC Barcelona C defeated the women's first team of Cerdanyola del Vallès FC 30–0 in a league match of the Preferent Femení, the top-level regional division of Catalan women's football.

Background

[edit]

Barcelona C was founded in 2022 as a bridge between the youth sections of FC Barcelona Femení and the B team;[1] having to register at the bottom of the pyramid, in their first season the C team was already noted for wildly unbalanced scorelines (including multiple games scoring over 20 unanswered goals) and achieved successive promotions to reach the Preferent.[2][3][4]

At the end of the 2023–24 season, the entire squad of the Cerdanyola del Vallès FC women's team left the club over issues addressed in an open letter denouncing Cerdanyola's lack of interest in women's football, under-funding of the department, and lack of player payment since October 2023.[5] As such, the team languished at the bottom of the table in the Preferent by March 2025,[6] and had already lost 0–24 to Terrassa FC femení in February.[7]

Match

[edit]

There were ten different goalscorers, half of whom scored at least a hat-trick; Noa Ortega scored nine goals.[8][6] Cadena SER noted that, after scoring the 16th goal, Barcelona C failed to find the net for eight minutes in their longest dry period of the match.[9]

Aftermath

[edit]

The result meant that Barcelona C continued to lead the Preferent, with 22 wins and 1 draw, and a +148 goal difference. Cerdanyola remained bottom of the table with 20 losses from 20 games played, on -3 points (following sanction) and a -157 goal difference.[10][11][6]

Unlike previous attention attracted in awe of Barcelona C's dominance, the scoreline reopened the debate over the fairness and value of a team's ability to run up the score to such an extent;[11][6] media responses criticised Barcelona C for "disrespect"ing and "humiliating" Cerdanyola, and the Preferent for allowing points differences greater than sports with higher point-scoring.[12] It was one of the highest scorelines achieved in competitive women's football,[12] and senior football in general.[9][c] Due to the young ages of the players involved, there was further debate on the need for development-focused matches in formative football – also following some unprecedented if less-reported margins of victory in children's leagues in recent years. A suggestion was made to adopt a version of the match-pairing Swiss system that "could be adapted to senior sports", as had been done in some recreational basketball in Madrid.[11][12]
