Patrizio Bertelli (born 6 April 1946) is an Italian businessman and former co-chief executive officer (CEO) of Prada Group, a role he shared with his wife Miuccia Prada of the Prada Group.[1] As of October 2024, his net worth was estimated as US$5.7 billion.[2]
Life and career
[edit]Born in the Tuscan city of Arezzo in 1946, Patrizio Bertelli started his career in the leather goods industry before transitioning to the luxury sector. At age 21, while attending university, he founded Sir Robert,[3] a small leather goods company.
In the late 1970s, Bertelli met Miuccia Prada, granddaughter of Mario Prada, founder of the Prada brand. Their professional relationship later evolved into marriage.
In the 1980s, Bertelli consolidated the production process within the company to improve quality control and efficiency in the luxury goods sector. This included product differentiation, the creation of new collections and labels, and the renovation of boutiques. These changes contributed to the company’s significant growth during the 1980s and 1990s.
In the late 1990s, Bertelli and Miuccia Prada collaborated with architects Rem Koolhaas and Herzog & de Meuron to launch the "Prada Epicentres" project. These stores were designed to combine technology, design, and architecture as a way to enhance the shopping experience.[4]
The "Prada Epicentres" are located in New York (2001), Tokyo (2003), and Los Angeles (2004).
In 2000, Bertelli was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Florence.[5]
In 2013, Forbes included Bertelli and his wife among the most influential couples in the world.[6]
As of 2023, Bertelli is co-chief executive officer of the Prada Group, which includes Prada, Miu Miu, Church’s, Car Shoe, and Marchesi 1824.
Further interests
[edit]Bertelli and his wife co-founded Fondazione Prada in 1993, inspired by their shared interest in contemporary art and culture. Fondazione Prada includes a Venetian palace on the Grand Canal, Ca’ Corner della Regina, and a 19,000-square-meter exhibition space in Milan, opened in May 2015. Some Fondazione Prada projects took place in locations such as Paris, London, Seoul, and Tokyo.
In 1997, Bertelli established the sailing team Prada Challenge to compete in the America’s Cup 2000. Prada sponsored the Luna Rossa team in several America’s Cup editions, winning the Challengers’ Selection Series in 2000 and reaching the finals in 2007 and 2013.[7] On 29 June 2012, Bertelli became the first Italian inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame.[8]
Personal life
[edit]Bertelli and Miuccia Prada have two children, Guilio and Loranezo, and reside in Milan, Italy.[2] Lorenazo Bertelli holds key ownership stakes in the Prada Group.[9]
